Lugu Hu, The realm of the Mosu people
Perched on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, Lugu Hu is still a place where mass tourism hasn’t taken its toll. A beautiful alpine lake at an altitude of 2600 meters, Lugu Hu has pristine waters and an amazing nature all around. The area, traditionally inhabited by the Mosu minority, boosts great scenery and is a great way to start a trip into Yunnnan passing from one of its backdoor routes.
The Place
Lugu Hu has a Sichuanese side and a Yunnanese side. You can enter from either one, paying a nature park fee of 80 rmb per person at one of the toll gates. The Sichuan side is where Duoshe, the main town, lies. From here it is a very short stroll to the “Walking Marriage Bridge” and the Chaohai southern bay of the lake. Walking marriage? Well, this is a traditional habit of the Mosu people, which are one of the few matriarchal societies still existing on Earth. The tradition says that the Mosu women, uncaring of marriage and having a man besides, were practicing something that might be described as “free love”: the man uses to visit them at night, and go back to his mother’s house in the morning, and to do so he has to cross this bridge. This legend has inspired many to describe Lugu Hu has a “world of women and paradise of men”. We have our doubts, anyways, but the Yunnan side of the lake, where the villages of Lige and Luoshui are, has a touristier feel, and is popular with couples and holidaymakers looking for “love escapades”. Besides this fame, Lugu Hu is a stunning place of natural beauty, an area which is great to explore hiking, biking or camping.
Getting There
Lugu Hu is better connected now, with a direct mountain highway to Xichang in southern Sichuan, and another one connecting to famous Lijiang in Yunnan. Public buses or minivan ply these two routes for in-between 60 and 75 rmb, a total journey time of around 7 hours both ways. The roads are sealed but are categorized as “mountain highways”, so you know you are in for some bumpy rides along scenic stretches of savage natural beauty.
It is also possible to arrive to Lugu Hu trough Daocheng in Southwestern Sichuan, coming down from the Sichuan-Tibet highway, but the road is definitely not a good one and transportation needs to be arranged privately (and expensively). We suggest you to come from Lijiang or Xichang (to get there, take a night train from Chengdu). It is also possible to get here from Panzihua on the Yunnan-Sichuan border, but the Xichang route is around 50 km shorter, and more direct.
What to Do
In Lige: get up early and see the sunrise on the lake. Take a morning stroll around the pathways and just relax on the lakeside. You can rent a bicycle and venture up the main road to cycle a bit further up or down the coast to enjoy better views. At night, have a special barbecued pork dinner, real Mosuo style, in any of the many bars and guesthouses lining up the lake front.
In Duoshe: relax, because there is not much to do here in terms of entertainment. Walk down the road to the first right turn off and walk down to the “Walking Marriage” bridge. There are fantastic sunset views of the lake from here, and it is possible to cross the Cao Hai part and get into the south eastern most part. With more time, get back from Cao Hai and on your way back from the river turn left where the road forks off from the Lamasery, and have a scenic walk along the crest jutting in the middle of the lake. You can hike all the way and return back to Duoshe this way, after a fantastic exploration of this southwestern area of Lugu Hu.
